Poetry May Not Rhyme

Some Poetry May Not Rhyme but it doesn’t mean that it is not poetry all the same. It seems it is more important that the words are spaced properly on the line and on the page. There are rules and style requirements for different kinds of poetry that you can look up on the web or even watch a YouTube video to learn how to create them yourself. Check out this article written about this same subject I just found on the web: https://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-the-different-types-of-non-rhyming-poems.htm

Here is an example of my own that I posted on my Facebook personal page last month.

As a child
I enjoyed
Wasting time
Sitting atop
My grandparents’
Three board post & rail fence
In their backyard

It was painted
White
And separated them
From
Their neighbors’
Dirt driveway
I waved as their car
Came
And
Went

It wasn’t
particularly comfortable
Sitting up there
But
It didn’t matter
Sometimes
As if by magic
A bird landed
Close by
Only
To flap away
As soon as it recognized
The fact
I had no wings

Usually
I fiddled,
Doddled,
Dilly dallied,
And,
Lingered longer
Than I should
I’m sure

But
I had big ideas
Then
Impossible
Dreams
Never ending
Stories
Songs
To be
Sung

I only wish
I could
Remember
Them

Some Quick Info For Writers and Readers Too

  • A poem with no rhyme scheme is termed as a Free verse poem.
  • Blank verse is non-rhyming poetry that clings to an internal rhythm, such as iambic pentameter.
  • Concrete poetry, sometimes called shape or size poetry, tries to create an image through the placement of the words; a poem about birds, for example, may resemble a bird spreading its wings.
  • Haikus are non-rhyming poems consisting of three lines, each containing a set number of syllables: five, then seven, and then five again.
