Who Is Your Favorite Poet

Who Is Your Favorite Poet? Poetry has been around for a very, very long time. It has been an excellent way to tell a story, express feelings, or just plain rage at what is happening in a person’s life for centuries. They have been converted over to songs, created into full-length books and inspired movies.

My Favorite Poets

An Acrostic
Edgar Allan Poe – 1809-1849

Elizabeth it is in vain you say
“Love not” — thou sayest it in so sweet a way:
In vain those words from thee or L.E.L.
Zantippe’s talents had enforced so well:
Ah! if that language from thy heart arise,
Breath it less gently forth — and veil thine eyes.
Endymion, recollect, when Luna tried
To cure his love — was cured of all beside —
His follie — pride — and passion — for he died.

I like to see it lap the Miles
Emily Dickinson – 1830-1886

I like to see it lap the Miles,
And lick the valleys up,
And stop to feed itself at tanks;
And then, prodigious, step

Around a pile of mountains,
And, supercilious, peer
In shanties by the sides of roads;
And then a quarry pare

To fit its sides, and crawl between,
Complaining all the while
In horrid, hooting stanza;
Then chase itself down hill

And neigh like Boanerges;
Then, punctual as a star,
Stop—docile and omnipotent—
At its own stable door.

Although this young lady is known far and wide for your many great poems she never received any recognition during her lifetime. In fact, her first book of poetry wasn’t published until a few years after her death. Now that is extremely sad.

If we encounter a man of rare intellect, we should ask him what books he reads. – Ralph Waldo Emerson – https://www.biography.com/writer/ralph-waldo-emerson

Water
Ralph Waldo Emerson – 1803-1882

The water understands
Civilization well;
It wets my foot, but prettily,
It chills my life, but wittily,
It is not disconcerted,
It is not broken-hearted:
Well used, it decketh joy,
Adorneth, doubleth joy:
Ill used, it will destroy,
In perfect time and measure
With a face of golden pleasure
Elegantly destroy.
